MEN;S 50 PLUS TENNIS LEAGUE OF LEE COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS MESSAGE
HANK MORGAN
NOVEMBER 2009
The Men’s 50 Plus Tennis League
of Lee County has continued to expand. We now have a record of 78
teams divided into 11 flights. We will have about 608 of Lee
County’s senior citizens playing competitive doubles tennis each
week during our regular season. These players will come from 29
tennis clubs who make up a total League population of just about
1100 members.
To accommodate
our expansion, we have increased the number of members on the
Executive Committee from three to five. The Executive Committee
(EC) will consist of a Commissioner, Scheduling Director, and Red,
White, and Blue Division Managers. I will continue to serve as
your Commissioner. Bob Dalton and Jim Hebert will continue serve
on the EC. Bob Dalton has taken on the duties of Scheduling
Director and Jim will continue to manage the White Division. Tom
Jarvis and Bob Oswald are the newest members of the EC. Tom, who
plays on the Legends Red Team and a previous captain, will manage
the Red Division. Bob Oswald, who captains a Shadow Wood Blue
Team, will manage the Blue Division. As questions arise, please
contact your Division Manager by email or telephone and may be
found in the Contacts Section on this site. All five members of
the EC are members of different tennis clubs, namely, Pelican
Landing, Landings, Legends, Lexington, and Shadow Wood.
At the Captains
Luncheon last spring, we agreed to rewrite and revise our rules.
This past summer, Tom Jarvis from the Red division, Todd Mitchell
from the White Division and Ron Clearfield from the Blue Division,
unselfishly, took on and successfully completed this large task.
Gentlemen, thank you for your untiring efforts. The new rules are
posted on the web site in the Information Section. We have kept
the rules as brief as possible and I strongly recommend that you
read them before the season starts. Restriction of the use of 4.0
level players has been eliminated. Our match pointing system
where all courts, one through four, count the same has been
retained. Each court is assigned one point for a win and no
points for a loss. Coaching is discouraged and we continue to play
our four courts in a match in order of strength. This system
works without “sand-bagging” due to the high level of integrity
continually displayed by our Captains. We adhere to the dress
code established by the host tennis club where a match is played.
We will continue to play 2 out of 3 full sets; there will be no
super tie-breaker in lieu of a 3rd set. We use the 7
point Coman tie-breaker when a set gets to 6 – 6.
Please note that
each individual flight schedule appears on a single page and each
match is separated from other matches by a double line. The
shaded area denotes the home team for each match.
Each year when the
League has surplus funding, we donate to a charitable organization
associated with tennis. This fall, the League made a donation to
the Lee County Community Tennis Association (LCCTA). The LCCTA
provides tennis programs to at-risk children and handicapped
citizens at no cost.
I wish to thank
Bob Dalton and Jim Hebert for their untiring support of our
League. I, also, wish to welcome Tom Jarvis and Bob Oswald to the
EC.
May you all enjoy
good health and a competitive tennis season.
Hank Morgan
